Upon visiting Havana a few years back, I was told by many locals that Fidel Castro’s favorite size was the lancero. In my experience, I’ve found them a unique experience, similar to the “expresso” of cigars. Let’s jump into this iconic size crafted by Don Pepin Garcia.
- Factory: My Father Cigars S.A.
- Wrapper: Ecuador (Habano Oscuro cultivar)
- Binder: Nicaragua
- Filler: Nicaragua
- Size: 7 1/2 Inches x 38
The Pre Light
From the wrapper, I’m getting a soft note of cocoa. The foot gives a strong odor of a tobacco barn and fermented tobacco. Even tho slim, the lancero feels elegant. It reminds me of bringing out the fine china on a holiday. The cherry on top of that is the pigtail cap on this beauty! Old school Cuban style 🙂
Draw flavors are dry Spanish cedar. Retro hale yields strong tobacco and black pepper. It’s a medium body at this point. After the draw fades away, a subtle nuttiness takes over your tastes buds. Very enjoyable.
After about 15 minutes, the flavor has increased to medium-full. It gives a plethora of white flavorful smoke. The draw is perfect, plenty of smoke to go around.
This stick burns with a bright white ash. I believe there to be well-aged tobacco inside, it yields smooth smoke. Reminds me of top-shelf scotch, very smooth. Draw flavors have evolved into a nutty and black pepper mix followed by a rich creaminess. Similar to that after eating ice cream, a richness coats your mouth. Not much a transition from the first third, but I’ll take more of a good thing. At the halfway point the flavors of the draw have really muted down, while all the flavor comes from the retro-hale.
As we approach the end, coffee flavor is starting to appear on draw flavors. The cigar comes alive at the last 2”. It seems once you removed the band she really finishes strong! Very rich flavor with a long finish. The nub is my favorite part of this cigar, like coffee and cocoa flavors after dinner. A great dessert stick!
The cigar checks all the boxes: perfect construction and performance with great flavor. I was expecting a bit more of a transition in the end of the cigar but nonetheless enjoyed the entire stick. I also like to point out the awesome artwork on the bands. It’s like icing on the cake.
Buy It Again?
100% Yes. It reminds me of a rare bottle of wine while relatively easy to obtain. I see these on cigarmonster.com often. If you haven’t used the monster, check it out: http://www.cigarmonster.com.
